A Day for Malcolm X

Malcolm X/El Hajj Malik El Shabazz

Marvin X in Harlem NY, 1968
photo Dough Harris

"It wasn't nothing nice being in Harlem in 1968 and a follower of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. I was on Malcolm's holy turf and all sides wanted to know where I was coming from. The Malcolmites were my fellow Black Arts Movement artists, but the politico ideologues and the Nation of Islam members came to check my Black Arts Movement readings to hear what I was saying. After all, his assassination caused a great majority of the North American African nation to suffer grief and trauma, perhaps similar to the anguish and grief Shia Muslims suffer in their annual ritual bloodletting as an act of mourning at the death of Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of Prophet Muhammad. As in the split between Sunni and Shia Islam, North American Africans were divided, especially the Sunni or Orthodox Muslims, and for sure the followers of Malcolm X, whether Sunni Muslim or not. History has revealed the US government was the most critical actor in the death of Malcolm X. And after he was prevented from departing his plane in France, did not Malcolm say his adversaries were beyond the Nation of Islam since the NOI did not run France?

Nevertheless, in Harlem, I told the truth as I knew it. When Malcolm was assassinated, 1965, I was a student at San Francisco State University, and like most of us Black students, I considered myself a Black Nationalist and follower of Malcolm X. I didn't join the Nation of Islam until a brief association with Eldridge Cleaver, Huey Newton, Bobby Seale and their Black Panther Party. After a problematic experience with Eldridge at the Black House, San Francisco, 1967, I fled into the Nation of Islam before going into exile as a draft resister who refused to be a running dog for American imperialism in Vietnam. I went to Canada, but soon returned to the US underground to Detroit, Chicago and Harlem, 1968.

When my Harlem mentor and guide, Askia Muhammad Toure', introduced me to Malcolm's widow, Dr. Betty Shabazz, she turned her head away from me, although she was more friendly when we met again years later when I was out with saw Amina and Amiri Baraka, our mutual friends. When I discovered she was a Gemini like myself, I loved everything about her because I understood everything about her! And astrologically, I understood Malcolm too, i,e., as a Taurus, he was a real man, loyal and true."

A Day for Malcolm

A day for Malcolm X
El Hajj Malik El Shabazz
For the good he said and did
Hapi b day Warrior King
You woke the deaf dumb blind
You came from Royal line
Yo mama and daddy worked
With Garvey
Elijah mentored you
Like Shams and Rumi
Jealous ones are true
No matter the devils
You did what you came to do
We love you honor you praise you
A true trooper through an' through

Marvin X's first book of poems, Fly to Allah, marks him as the father of Muslim American literature. (See Dr. Mohja Khaf, University of Arkansas, also, Dr. Ellen McLarney, Chair, Islamic Studies, Duke University. "He's the USA's Rumi, the wisdom of Saadi, the ecstasy of Hafiz," according to Bob Holman.
Ishmael Reed says, "He's Plato teaching on the streets of Oakland." Dr. Cornel West says, "He's the African Socrates in the hood...a combination Thelonious Monk and Marianne Williamson!"

Look at the people born same day as you: Ho Chi Minh and Yuri Kochiyama
What greater two?
Ho Chi Minh ran devils out Vietnam
Yuri ran to your side
Before you died
We love you Yuri
Bandung Woman Supreme
FYI, every time I saw Yuri
she praised me to the sky
told me how much she loved me
Yuri, my love for you shall never die!

Lorraine Hansberry May 19 too!
A Raisin in the Sun
I am from the land of raisins
Central Valley of Cali
Mama born there too
After we cut them
we spread them on paper trays to dry
The sun is 110-114 degrees where I was born
Sun Maid Raisin land
Langston said and Lorraine expanded extricated
Malcolm X made it plain!
We love you Langston:
"What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun....?"

A raisin in the sun of Black Love!

"Or fester like a sore
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load

Or does it explode?"
--Langston Hughes

Oh, Malcolm
We heard you speak before
7,000 students at UC Berkeley

Malcolm X at Sproul Hall, UC Berkeley, 1963
before 7, 000 students

Heard you again that night at the mosque in West Oakland
7th and Henry
Never saw you again
But you rocked my world
I became X because of you
Like millions of Xs
You taught Elijah's Message
To The Black Man
The devil always splits the atom
If we listen to Shaitan
Who whispers into the hearts of men
Minfadlik, Sami Allahu liman hamida
Rabbana laka Al hamd
Please, Allah hears those who praise Him
Our Lord to Thee is due all praise!

When will the Zionist announce Gaza is no more?

When will the Zionist announce Gaza is no more

When will the Zionist announce Gaza is no more
When will the Fake USA Zionist media CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC say
the Gaza concentration camp is demolished
Like Hutis announced the Tutsi roaches are no more
We killed them all
No Black Flag needed
Machetes imported from China sufficed
Let the Zionists announce and the USA sycophantic news
scream in unison
We killed all the Palestinians in self defense
our human right
They had no human right to self defense
No right to send rockets to our cities
No right to fight for human rights in Jerusalem West Bank Gaza
We demand the slaughter of Gaza complete no water, i.e., clean, no fishing, growing food, vaccines, electricity, no air sun
all buildings demolished
people decapitated
Hamas leaders incinerated yes, those in the Al Jazeera AP high rise those hiding in refugee camps
Gaza no more
Zionist happy
used to kill in sadness now kill with joy
all oppressors say oppressed devoid of humanity
ah, we love the humanity of their art
ah, we love the beauty of their bones skulls
they adorn our museums
our anthropologists study remains of scientific destructions
Yes, E. Franklin said our diseases were more potent than our guns
give them our virus and vaccines the same germ warfare scheme
give ignorance to the world
After Hitler there are no concentration camps
We put Japs in internment centers
Negroes in ghettoes
Palestinians confined by Hamas not Zionist
Hamas terrorist confine Palestinians with Iranian rockets ideology
Hamas reason Palestinians not free
Hamas won't let Gaza exit to Egypt
Work in Israel
Hamas makes Zionist settlers displace Palestinians
Hamas is the monster villain satan
Like niggas in the ghettoes
we the reason police shoot us
we the reason we shoot us
yes, we sold ourselves into slavery
put our own black asses on slave ships
sailed to America eating watermelon yams
shitting pissing on each other during the wonderful Middle Passage
In the name of Jesus we jumped ship
gave sharks our bodies bones
humming Thank you Jesus for saving wretched me
jungle me
me of gold silver salt ivory
me of spirituality in tune with nature stars
savage me in need of civility
like Palestinians
sand niggas
starving for Zionist democracy best in the world
After America
Oh, Zionists please teach us Palestinians democracy
Make America happy
Saudi Arabia
Sunni nations
Egypt Gulf States
Ah, yes, Abraham Accords of the Trump Zionists
fuck Gaza Abraham Accords said
fuck filthy Palestinians
they told my son on his Fulbright to Syria
"Why you hanging around those filthy Palestinians,"
Syria Secret Police asked
at University of Damascus
Let Gaza burn to ashes
Let the Jews bomb from air land sea
if Palestinians get free
All oppressed Arab masses might want freedom too
Women might want to drive cars in Saudi Arabia
Girls might seeking education in Afghanistan when Taliban return
Uncle Abdullah Arabs chant at prayer times
We and Israel are one
Axis of Evil yes
Saudi Arabia, Egypt
Persian Gulf states
one against Persians
against Ottomans
who seek to revive what shall never be
We Arab kingdoms are with the Zionist for eternity
No matter Saladin the Kurd came after 100 years
Ran Crusaders back to Europe, Richard the Lion too
Zionists history is mythology of the gun
Wild Wild West philosophy
fake democracy in the Holy Land
Will you lie in the Kingdom of God
In the Holy of Holies
Will frankincense myrrh sanctify Temple Mount Wailing Wall
Jesus called us devils murderers liars
He was not one of us
He chased us out the temple with his whip
denied we were of truth
He said, "If you are Abraham's children
why don't you do the works of Abraham?"
"If God is your Father
why don't you love me?
Why do you seek to kill me
because I tell you the truth?
You are liars and murderers!"
Look at the Gaza destruction
Gaza concentration camp wasn't enough
You must transcend Hitler in debauchery
From whom is your reward
Surely not God Almighty
Is it Satan whom you serve
Take me to your leader
Your shamans of myth/ritual demonology
High Priests of human misery
We are not convinced you are Chosen people of God
God is Good while you are evil
God is Just while you oppress
God is Kind while you are mean
We know of hubris
Pride come before the fall
What criminal history was not ephemeral
Fanon said all de-colonialism is successful
Alas, no force can defeat those determined to be free
Liberty or death is not the question
The question is time
What did Solomon say about time?
A time for you
A time for me
A time for love
A time for hate
A time for war
A time for peace.
And after all the above, Solomon said,
"What if all is vanity and vexation of spirit?"
So what you have returned to Jerusalem.
Did you come in peace?
Did you come in love?
Did you come in justice?
Did you come in righteous?
Did you come in humility?
Or did you come in arrogance?
Did you come in domination?
Did you come in oppression?
How did you return to your Father's House
How did you occupy His many mansions?
Did you share the wealth of Your Father's Glory
Were you niggardly in generosity
How did you treat the least of those in need of love?
Answer me, O, Kingdom of Israel.
Chosen people of Holy of Holies.
Do not reply in the falsehood of devils
Be silent if you do not come in truth.
The world is tired of your lies murder for ancient myths rituals
burnt incense of no consequence.
Same as your guns bombs planes
of no consequence bodies men women children slain
power is of the insane
take me to the endgame
the blood
broken bones
shame. insane. no gain.

 Childhood Notes on Palestine

Preface

In a few days I shall celebrate my 77th birthday, but as the poem below reveals, I have been conscious of events in Palestine since I was four years old, 1948. It was not enough that I was born, May 29, 1944, into the atomic bomb age. I am so thankful I was born of conscious parents who attended the 1945 San Francisco Peace Conference that established the United Nations. But I have never forgotten the 1948 news reels during intermission at the drive-in theatre I attended with my brother and parents. When I saw masses of Palestinian refugees fleeing across that bridge into Jordan, I recall sitting so horrified and traumatized that I didn't think to ask my parents what was going on. I just knew in my four year old mind something was very very wrong. I suspect the newsreel was giving the Western point of view as it is giving us at this very hour as I write, i.e., Israel has the right of self defense to slaughter Palestinians who dare exercise their human right to self defense by any means necessary. Yet, as I suspect the fake media did in 1948 (then beyond my comprehension as a four year old), at this hour it is proclaiming Palestinians the villains and Israel the victims, though happily, especially through social media, the world is seeing who the true victims are as a result of American taxpayers and bipartisan support from the American political sycophants.

I am neither Democrat nor Republican, I am a revolutionary Black nationalist. In 1980, when I addressed the Oakland, California National Conference of Black Men at the Oakland Auditorium, I said, "We Black men (and women) support Yasser Arafat's call for Palestinian state. We want the same national independence Yasser Arafat demands for Palestinians." I repeat my notes to the Black Men's Conference in 1980. Since the present uprising in occupied Palestine, we have viewed video documentaries of conditions in the occupied areas, not to mention the Zionist version Nazi concentration camps as in Gaza. But the settler invasion, occupation displacement of Palestinians reminded us of gentrification in the ghettoes of America, with the concomitant removal of North American Africans, especially when the whites settlers arrive, alas, often joined by their Negropean sycophants who are in unity with displacing the long term residents who have been removed from their neighborhood by hook or crook, mostly by the latter, and the new settlers often find those remaining uncivilized when they sing too loudly in the church they have been saved and sanctified in for decades. And after the neo-liberal settlers have replaced the ghetto inhabitants, the settlers first project is placing Black Lives Matter signs in their windows as the former inhabitants make their way to homeless encampments nearby or where-ever. Of course, in occupied Palestine, settler occupation is more sinister, alas, the settlers often take up residence before the occupants are removed. Can we not imagine why events in East Jerusalem and the West Bank are approaching the level of violence in the Gaza concentration camp?

Not only are Americans deaf dumb and blind to events in occupied Palestine, they suffer the same myopia as per gentrification and displacement in American ghettoes, i.e., concentration camps. As per the homeless, America is spending billions for transitional housing when the simple solution is granting the "unhoused" a life estate to housing, thus, ending homelessness overnight. But the myopia is so severe, the City of Oakland is planning to build housing for the unhoused near the Lake Merritt area, yes, the site where Black vendors have been removed and relocated, if only a slight distance, from the lake residents and businesses that have found their presence a nuisance. And the City is planning housing for the homeless adjacent to the lake?

Just know this: those who champion equity don't mean it, just as those who talk about Black Lives Matter don't mean it. When the institutions and corporations who have oppressed us suddenly donate to our liberation, we must be suspicious for it may be in the best manner of the Trojan horse, except when we count the dollar amount of reparations and the memoranda of understanding that clearly state we follow our own agenda and take orders from no one, especially our former oppressors, no matter their new-found recovery from the addiction to white supremacy. We think long term recovery is due.

It was not enough to be born
May 29, 1944
Just before atom bomb Japan
Then when I was 4
Mom and Dad took us to the drive-in theater
After cowboys killed Indians
Newsreel came on
Dad went to get popcorn
I watched news
Saw all those people fleeing Palestine
Across bridge into Jordan
I didn't understand then.
Don't understand now
Pain of Palestine
I don't understand why Hitler
Killed Jews
don't understand hatred so deep
I wish somebody could help me understand the joy of oppressing another human being
grinding them into dust lampshades
but before Hitler King Leopold's Congo
Imagine the Ottomans and Armenians
Hutus and Tutsis
Boku Haram Taliban
Irish Catholics Protestants
Irag Sunni Shia inhumanity
Remember that song
"How Long has this been going on?"

I don't understand why Jews
Won't share the land
After Hitler how can Jews
Deny humanity of Palestinians anyone
How can you mistreat God's people
Yet you are chosen of God
You crush the oppressed
Yet you were crushed
Your suffering taught you nothing
You are chosen yet blind
In the Holy land
what price ancient myths rituals
When unholiness is your practice
You think carnal weapons will suffice
Are you superior to God
Do you worship God
Are do you suppose God
Worships you?
Dad came with popcorn
We ate
1948
Watched cowboys kill Indians.
Didn't know we was "Indians" too.
