The Meaning of BAM, The Black Arts Movement

BAM was a revolutionary act/action, in tandem with the Black liberation movement, inseparable and integral. BAM was Juju word power, holy ghost dance, music, art, mythology to negate white supremacy in white or black face. We had to figure out how to live in this world but not be of this world controlled by white supremacy, thus BAM was an act of self-determination. BAM was not for the black bourgeoise agenda, was not to make Negroes comfortable sitting in the theater, but to make the audience join the action (ritual theatre) and become one, and, when necessary run out of the theatre butt naked, screaming and hollering because the truth touched them and changed them.--Marvin X

Kim,

Somehow I just received your emailed request with me inadvertently at the head of the “TO” line, presumably because it happened to follow a message I had recently sent you. I’ll give the matter some thought and may send a comment later, as I am presently much too humbled by Marvin’s brief but apt  manifesto of the Black Arts Movement I only stumbled into in a small way with the publication of my “Black Anglo Saxons” – and that according to Kalamu ya Salaam (Cf. his “Historical Overview to the Black Arts Movement” in The Oxford Companion to African-American Literature). But more than that, I’m afraid my vision is so blurred and bifurcated the Black Arts Movement momentarily reminds me of a blackened picture of Dorian Gray, with our liberation movement long on ice but continuing to decay. Which I suppose is why these erstwhile and illustrious black arts pioneers are poised to answer your call to converge at the University of California’s Merced campus and paint a Portrait of BAM.

Later,
Nathan

Our Story

Hello, my name is Haki Madhubuti. I am the founder and publisher of Third World Press, America’s oldest independent publisher devoted to works for, by, and concerning African Americans and others.
We are very grateful that Malcolm’s children have granted us the opportunity to publish The Diary; it is the most important volume we have ever brought to the public, after more than 46 years in publishing.

I am presenting this information to you because we need your help to do this in the manner that honors and respects the importance of Malcolm. While we have been the leading publisher of great works of many renowned authors including Gwendolyn Brooks, Chancellor Williams, Sonia Sanchez, Amiri Baraka, Barbara Ann Sizemore and many others, we have never sought commercial blockbusters. Our books were largely focused on smaller, often academic markets.

While we have published hundreds of important works over 46 years, the recent recession and changes in the publishing industry have taken their financial toll on TWP. While many independent publishers have simply disappeared, the devoted staff and supporters of Third World Press have done whatever it takes to survive. Through their hard work and financial support we have remade the Press, and are on the brink of a new and brighter future. We have a strong new distributor relationship, having partnered with one of the world’s largest distributors and printer of books. We are converting much of our inventory so that we can meet the demands of the ebook customer, and we have assembled a great new lineup of books for publication in the next few months.

The first and most important of these is The Diary of Malcolm X, which will be released in November 2013. This exciting document was edited and annotated by author and journalist Herb Boyd in collaboration with Malcolm’s and Betty’s third eldest daughter, Ilyasah Al-Shabazz.

In it we see the deep reflections of this transformative figure as he developed a new vision for the elevation and integration of the African Diaspora in the context of the world changing events that are having so great an impact on today’s headlines, both in the United States and throughout the world.

What We Need & What You Get

We need your help because a book of this importance needs to be supported with an appropriate campaign of public relations and marketing. These costs far exceed our resources. Even the costs incurred to date, and the costs of initial printing, are beyond our financial capacity without your help.

Thankfully, we believe that you will be there to allow us to make this undertaking a great success; to help us to let the world at large know of the opportunity to become reacquainted with Malcolm X in a manner that is more personal than any previous encounter. We believe we can count on you to help make this a best seller.

We believe that you, our supporters, deserve to be the recipients of meaningful rewards for your participation in this campaign and we welcome you as old friends and new to the family of the Third World Press.

As a token of our gratitude, we have taken the time to put together some perks in exchange for your support:

The Impact

Malcolm X was one of the most important contributors to the advancement of human rights and human dignity in the last century. His words and actions have moved nations and peoples.

In coming weeks, the world will see, The Diary of Malcolm X, printed contents of his private diary from the year 1964. This Diary, recorded by Malcolm during the year immediately preceding his assassination, describes his travels to many nations, and meetings with numerous world leaders. In these pages, Malcolm describes the deep emotional connections he developed during a period that was constantly colored by his prophetic sense of impending tragedy. Recovered recently from the memorabilia maintained by the family, he lays out his unique action plan for African Americans.

The publication of The Diary of Malcolm X is a great historical event in African American intellectual history. Reading these entries has the effect of overhearing a profound thinker’s most private and uncensored thoughts about everything from his split with Elijah Muhammad to the cost of 16mm film in Accra. I found this a riveting and deeply moving experience, one that only made me even sadder at the senselessness of his assassination. Every student of Malcolm X, and the history of black political leadership, should read this compelling book.

Parable of Dr. Yacoub's America: 12-year-old boy Murders Marine Vet. Middle School Teacher

According to Elijah's Myth of Yacoub, the big head scientist found the

magnetic attraction between two pieces of steel. We maintain America
is the land of Yacoub's children who love playing with steel. America

Slain teacher called hero for giving Nevada children time to flee

SPARKS, Nevada | Tue Oct 22, 2013 4:49pm EDT

(Reuters) - A popular math teacher shot dead by a 12-year-old boy at a Nevada middle school was praised as a hero on Tuesday, a day after he was gunned down when he stepped into the shooter's line of fire, giving students time to flee to safety.
The boy, armed with a gun police said he likely took from home, opened fire on the schoolyard on Monday, killing the teacher and wounding two other 12-year-olds just before the opening bell at the school in the northern Nevada town of Sparks.
As police seek to determine a motive, they are also hailing the actions of slain teacher Michael Landsberry and say more students could have been hurt if staff members had not rushed children into classrooms from the school yard.
The head of the school district's police force said that, after the attacker shot a 12-year-old boy in the shoulder, Landsberry "calmly walked toward the shooter, putting his hands up in a motion to try to stop" him and was shot in the chest.
"Mr. Landsberry's heroic actions by stepping toward the shooter allowed time for other students on the playground area to flee the area," said Washoe County School District Police Chief Mike Mieras.
The boy shot the teacher to death on a basketball court, according to Sparks deputy police chief Tom Miller. Afterward, he shot another student in the abdomen before walking away and shooting himself in the head.
Landsberry, 45, was a former Marine who also served in the Nevada Air National Guard, had taught at Sparks Middle School since 2006 and coached basketball, volleyball and soccer teams, Mieras said.
The incident was the latest in a string of shooting rampages across the United States in recent years, including one in December at a Connecticut elementary school that killed 20 students and six adults and helped reignite a national debate over gun control.
The two 12-year-old boys wounded in the shooting in Sparks, located just east of Reno near the California border, were rushed to a Reno hospital and their conditions are not life-threatening, officials said.
Police have so far not identified the young shooter, although they have said he used a Ruger 9mm semi-automatic handgun in the shooting.
"We believe that the student got it from his residence," Miller said, adding that the parents could potentially face charges for not preventing the boy from making off with the gun.
"That is basically a question for the local prosecutor, but the potential is there."

Parable of Dr. Yacoub's America

In the populist black studies of Elijah Muhammad, we are taught a big-head
scientist genetically engineered the white man by separating the
dominant and recessive genes from the aboriginal Asiatic black man.
Yacoub's bio tech lab was not much different from the bio-tech labs
operating in Berkeley and Emeryville, a few blocks from my house. We
have no doubt they have cloned a man in these labs, but are simply
delaying the announcement.

According to Elijah's Myth of Yacoub, the young scientist found the

magnetic attraction between two pieces of steel. We maintain America
is the land of Yacoub's children who love playing with steel. America
spends a trillion dollars making weapons of steel, making her the number
one arms merchant of the world. Children in the hood (and the suburbs) are addicted to steel
as well, whether guns to mainly kill each other or cars they turn into weapons
of destruction, using cars in "side shows" where people are needlessly injured
or killed. The children will stand in the street or walk directly into a two thousand pound
piece of steel and plastic, fearing nothing. If you stop before hitting
them, they will curse you and/or pull out a piece of steel to shoot you.
They use steel to resolve all disputes, sometimes before a discussion
or conflict resolution.

Yocoub utilized three workers on his bio-tech project: the doctor, nurse
and undertaker. These workers conspired to create the man of steel or devil.
They practiced a form of selective breeding, allowing the black to mate with
a brown and a brown with a lighter person until the white devil was created
after hundreds of years, 600 to be exact. Two blacks were not allowed to mate in this
experiment. Even today, there are some blacks who demand their children
not marry another black skinned person, only someone lighter. This is no
doubt residue from the Yacoubian psychopathology. If two blacks
produced a baby, the doctor, nurse and undertaker would conspire to
murder the baby to keep the experiment on track.

In modern America, we must note the three workers, doctor, nurse and undertaker,
are aided and abetted by workers from the petrochemical and
pharmaceutical industry, who are determined to fulfill their wish, "let
us make a man." The petrochemical workers produce the food in oil, not
earth. As much as possible the crops are genetically engineered. If not,
they are created by a healthy dose of insecticides, pesticides,
herbicides, fertilizers and dyes.

Naturally, the oil based rather than soil based food leads Yacoub's children
directly from the fruit of petrochemical workers into the hands of pharmaceutical workers in
league with the doctor, nurse and undertaker. The prescription drug
dealers connect with insurance companies to guide the patient into the
hands of the doctor, nurse and undertaker.

When poor Michael Jackson was found dead at the hands of his doctor, we knew the Myth of
Yacoub was alive and well. Michael was so addicted to the Myth of Yacoub
that he exceeded the limit of propriety in attempting to alter his
blackness in favor of the Yacoubian ideal of whiteness. But note his
doctor administered the hemlock that took him into oblivion.

There is almost no way to avoid the scheme or conspiracy of the Yacoubian
team of workers, the petrochemical, pharmaceutical, medical and funeral
agents.

When a man entered prison, the inmates warned him, "Don't get sick.
Whatever you do, don't get sick up in here. There's a prison graveyard
full of nigguhs who got sick." And so it is the same in America, don't get sick.
Yacoub's team of workers are eagerly awaiting you, sharpening their knives
until you get to the doctor and nurse, and finally the undertaker.

The only solution is to avoid living in the stress zone, for dis-ease is brought
about from stress, thus the food (petrochemical) is useless and dangerous; the medicine
(pharmaceutical) is useless and dangerous as it is not designed to heal
only prolong the illness unto death. Part of the last rites administered
to the victim of Yacoubism is that ride in a black steel hearse.

Brazil's Black Block Activists: Criminals or People Power?

Brazil's Black Block Activists: Criminals Or People Power?

The protests that swept through Brazil last summer raised the profile of the Black Bloc — masked anarchists who use violence to get their anti-capitalist message across. The secretive members explain that their tactics are intended to shake up a corrupt and complacent government. But many regular protesters feel that the Black Bloc has hijacked their movement and that they do more harm than good.
